Putting the V in Philosophy

In the run-up to V-Fest, the Vage Bond will return to the KRAAKKELDER with an evening full of philosophy! Because even within the world of philosophy, the (female) body has all too often disappeared to the margins. Let’s get our juices flowing with this philosophical dive into concepts like feminism, sexuality, desire and beauty standards!

Lotte Spreeuwenberg Fuckability and the right to sex.
Lotte is a philosopher and writer that aims to make philosophy accessible for a broad audience. She has written the book Liefde en revolutie, which aims to describe a philosophy of activism and calls us to action for various contemporary causes.

Who do we consider fuckable? And do politics influence our sexual desires? The conventional blonde slut is not only blonde, but also white, able-bodied and slim. If our desires are influenced by harmful ideologies (misogyny, racism, heteronormativity, etc.) we might want to change our desires. However, such moralism could possibly echo harmful practices, like prescribing men to ‘only love women’ and other oppressive rhetoric. But if we don't want regulation, how should we deal with sexual preferences in dating profiles such as 'NO FATS NO RICE NO SPICE '? In this lecture we investigate this paradox in the ethics and politics of sexual desire.

Amanda Cawston: The feminist case against pornography.
Amanda is an Assistant Professor within the Philosophy Department at Tilburg University, with a specialization in political philosophy, feminist philosophy and applied ethics.

In this lecture, Amanda will argue that the existing feminist anti-pornography debate has a misguided focus on the pornographic object. Instead, Amanda wants to redirect our critical gaze towards the consumers of pornography, and, in particular, to the attitudes such consumption reflects. To that end, she introduces an alternative approach that enables criticism of pornography as a reflection of sexist attitudes, as well as for its role in concealing these attitudes.

Yvette Drissen: From Skin Care Routines to One-Size-Fits-All Vaginas: A Philosophy of Beauty Ideals, Competition and Self-Love
Yvette is a philosopher and teacher at the Philosophy Department at Tilburg University, Her talk will bring together two of her fascinations, one of which is her research on the relationship between competition, comparison and self-love. Her second fascination is more personal, and concerns her own eternal struggle with wanting to live up to beauty ideals while at the same time also rejecting them.

What do you think when you look at yourself in the mirror? Which words do you use to describe your naked body? Looking at yourself with love and compassion is increasingly difficult in a world with ever higher beauty standards. In line with Heather Widdows, Yvette will argue that beauty ideals typically function as ethical ideals: the body is considered malleable; there is a constant promise that improvement is possible and good; hard work is needed to live up to internalized standards; and failure is met with shame and disgust. Inspired by thinkers like Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Martha Claeys, I will invite the audience to think about healthy forms of self-love in an age of skin care routines, diet culture and plastic surgery.
